Z Value Table
A z value table lists the area under the standard normal curve to the left of a z-score, so you can turn a z-score into a probability. Type a z-score below to get the exact area with the working shown, or type an area to find the z-score, and read the full table underneath.

How to read the z value table
Every row of the table starts with a z-score to one decimal place, and every column adds the second decimal. To find the area to the left of z = 1.96, go down to the row 1.9 and across to the column 0.06. The cell shows 0.9750, so about 97.50 % of values in a standard normal distribution lie below 1.96.
Worked example: z = 1.96
The area to the left of 1.96 is 0.975002. The area to the right is 1 − 0.975002 = 0.024998. Because the normal curve is symmetric, the area to the left of −1.96 is also 0.024998, so the two tails together hold 0.049996 of the area, which is why 1.96 is used for a two-sided 95 % interval.

Negative z-scores
For a negative z-score, use the negative table or use symmetry: the area to the left of −z equals the area to the right of z. For z = −1.28 the table gives 0.1003, meaning about 10.03 % of values fall below −1.28.
Common z values for confidence levels
| Confidence level | Two-sided z | One-sided z |
|---|---|---|
| 90 % | 1.6449 | 1.2816 |
| 95 % | 1.9600 | 1.6449 |
| 99 % | 2.5758 | 2.3263 |
Where the numbers come from
The table and the calculator use the standard normal distribution, with mean 0 and standard deviation 1. Each value is P(Z < z) = ½ × (1 + erf(z / √2)), where erf is the error function described in Abramowitz and Stegun, Handbook of Mathematical Functions (1964), chapters 7 and 26. On 20 October 2026 the calculator was compared with Python’s statistics module on 2,000 random z-scores against Python’s math.erf and on 300 random z-scores against its NormalDist class; the largest difference was 5.2 × 10−15. The inverse (area to z) was compared on 200 random areas and differed by less than 1 × 10−13.

If your data counts successes in a fixed number of trials rather than measuring a continuous value, the binomial distribution calculator gives the exact probabilities without a table.
Frequently asked questions
What is a z value table?
It is a table of the standard normal distribution that gives the area to the left of each z-score. The area is a probability, so a cell of 0.9750 means a 97.50 % chance of a value below that z.
How do I find a z-score from a probability?
Find the probability inside the table and read the row and column that lead to it, or type the probability into the box above and the calculator returns the z-score directly.
What is the z-score for 95 %?
For a two-sided 95 % interval, z = 1.96, which leaves 2.5 % in each tail. For a one-sided 95 % bound, z = 1.645.
Is a z table the same as a t table?
No. A z table assumes the standard normal distribution. A t table uses a distribution with heavier tails that depends on the sample size, and it is used when the population standard deviation is unknown.
